Elfwood Selections

One of the Top Three Wiki-Pages in the Wiki Awards! for the months of September/October/November

<img:stuff/eof23.jpg>

This wiki is about showing art and writing in www.Elfwood.com Anyone is free to make a feature. I [iippo], won't be making any more features here, (for my next stage you can join me in Selections), but if you want to make a feature, be my guest :)

<img:stuff/eof23.jpg>

Rules
-No featuring mod's choices. They get enough attention as it is. Also featuring an artist/writer who has plenty of mod's choices and is generally a very well-knows Wooder is not very nice. This is more about the unknown treasures in the Woods.
-No featuring anything that is part of a tour. Again, they get plenty of attention as it is.
-No featuring your own work. This wiki is for honouring others, not yourself, you selfish tit. And no, don't ask your friends to feature your work either. The wiki's point is also to get us Townspeople off the streets and into the Woods, wandering and searching for things.
-What you feature doesn't have to be the best thing ever in technique, since this is not a race or a contest. If a piece caught your eye because of the philosophical theme that touched your inner self in a way that nothing else ever has - even thought it's just a pencil sketch - you can feature it.

About the feature
-No sloppyness. Good spelling and grammar are important, as well as content: you have to discuss the piece, the why it is here and what you think of it. Both ups and downs, every piece has positive and negative sides. Write at least 10 sentences.
-It is recommended that you comment on the piece in Elfwood, telling the artist the same things you'll tell us here. You can also mention that you'll do a feature here.

About this feature:
I randomed across this picture and immediately delighted in its light mood and sweet spirit. It brings back vividly childhood summer memories of similar encounters with the fascinating creatures that we share the world with. So while the artistic execution isn't professional quality (mainly in terms of colour and background shading; her line quality and composition on the other hand leave you needing nothing more), I would argue that it doesn't have to be. Give me a drawing that actually has feeling and mood over Photoshop mastery any day. And that's why I give it now on to you :)

2007-05-11 [iippo]: *sigh* This wiki has failed. :( It didn't get Elftowners strolling in the Woods, it didn't get anybody making any extra effort for communication between EW and ET. The gap between the two is just too big, nobody cares and nobody bothers to make the effort to try. :(

2007-05-11 [Linderel]: I have a piece I'd like to feature, but I don't currently have time to be writing about it. :/

2007-05-11 [windowframe]: At the moment, I'm not sure I *want* anything to do with Elfwood.

2007-05-23 [iippo]: This is cool: Give constructive criticism.

2007-07-19 [Sunrose]: Personally the part where you have to discuss the piece scares me away. I'm not very good at that.
But in general the more work you ask people to do, the less inclined they are to do it. Not everyone has the time or the wish to put that effort in. That doesn't mean they don't like this wiki though.
If you'd ask for nominations only, I think more people would stroll through the woods looking for pieces they can nominate.
But that would mean most of the work would have to be done by you. And so you'd have to decide if it's worth it for you.
I do like this wiki, but I have enough work to do on my own feature wiki to start looking through Elfwood too and write so much about my finds. I've actually started writing less and less about my own features, because my goal is not to criticise but simply to show what we've got. My own opinion is not so important, because it matters more what the watchers think (even though I base my picks on my own preferences).

2007-07-23 [iippo]: Hmm, point. :/ But I do want to get people to speak up about the work too, just looking feels so passive, I want the thoughts that the work raise to be shared too... Will think about it.

2007-07-23 [Sunrose]: Hmm this is indeed something to think about..maybe create some kind of commentformat?
List a number of criteria that people could say something about..

2007-07-27 [iippo]: Bah. You know what - I'll just do it my way, and if no one wants to contribute, then you'll all just have to be brainwashed by my opinions. :P At least it'll be art-talk practice for me. ^^;

2007-07-27 [Sunrose]: Heh :P

2007-08-04 [Linderel]: Cowboy Bebop is not just a movie! The series is much better :O

2007-08-04 [Calico Tiger]: Yeah XD The fridge episode is my fave >:3 But agreed that it's a gorgeous image with the camera angle and the feeling of movement :D

2007-08-04 [Linderel]: It brings to mind Spike's battle scenes... he's so cool. ^_^

2007-08-04 [windowframe]: Whheeeeeee. <3

2007-09-22 [Lady Evangeline]: Absolutely love this one! It's perfect, and I've never seen anything like this before. Great work.

2007-09-22 [Calico Tiger]: Agreed! They're so pretty. I want one as a familiar in my d&d game :D

2007-10-11 [Lady of Lore]: [iippo] i won't let your wiki die ^_^ I'll feature it on the Art store and I'll get back into gear of recruiting members. ^_^ Does that sound good to you?

2007-10-11 [iippo]: I won't let it die either ^_^; Thank you, And if you could (get people to) write features, that's the best way to keep it going :) If not I'll do one tomorrow. I try to update on fridays, but I was travelling one friday and then uploaded on a monday and then my rhythm went all wrong and I tried to re-pace myself and get back to the Friday rhythm this week. Hopefully it'll work.
But more features from other people would be great. I'm tired of reading only what I have to say, >_>

2008-10-31 [Hedda]: Should I maybe add an art feature category on reviews? Makes it easier to get suggestions about new features.

2008-11-01 [iippo]: If you do add an art section, I think it should be mainly aimed at famous stuff, or in the least outside-ET stuff -- not Elftowners personal things. Someone giving another Elftowner a bad review wouldn't really help with the whole community feel, it'd feel like people here are really snobbish (especially if the artist thought it was the best thing they'd done so far).
I'd say leave Elftowners' stuff for featured art/wiki/poem etc... on Main Street and use reviews for things people want to tell other people about.

Is there a music section? How bout a YouTube/online video section?

2008-11-01 [Hedda]: Well, music is "stuff" at the moment. <img:stuff/dand-gif.gif>

I don't see a point of making a review of some art or other link that sucks. That's just pointless.

But if there is a linked art category, then it seems odd to not allow people to post other Elftowners' art too.

2008-11-01 [iippo]: It's not pointless. The point of a review is not to tell everyone of something really cool (though most people will use it like this, I imagine), the point is to tell everyone what you think. Loads of people do that with movies ("I went to see That Stupid Movie and it sucked, and this is why, and therefore no one should bother going to see it in my opinion") so if you see anything that annoyed you enough to tell everyone that you think it sucks, you would.

I can understand you probably don't get that a lot from art, but artists do. Sometimes the work other people do is really annoying; sometimes it is made even more annoying by the fact that so many people seem to like it and not see how annoying and stupid it really is. I've had this happen a number of times on ET, but I tend to go by the "if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all" -principle in those cases -- but I can name 10 active Elftowners of the top of my head (some of my dearest friends included, so not just trouble-makers either) who wouldn't keep quiet, who would rave off and say "this stuff by That User really sucks, and this is why I think so." That would be a review - but not very helpful for the whole community thing, because it would cause strife and annoyance.

I strongly recommend leaving Elftowners' stuff for the main street features. And it won't be any odder to have an art category and not put ETers stuff on than it is to have a book category and not put ETers writings, or a website category and not put ETers wikipages.
